Science Trek
Science Trek is a place where parents, kids, and educators can watch short, educational videos on a variety of science topics. Every Monday Science Trek releases a new video that introduces children to math, science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) career potentials in a fun, informative way.[MUSIC] JOAN CARTAN-HANSEN, HOST: There're six simple machines: the inclined plane, the pulley, the screw, the wheel and axle, the wedge, and the lever.
A simple machine is a device that helps us move things.
We move things with a force.
A force is a push or pull.
Simple machines help us change the amount of force or the direction of the force needed to move an object.
Say, you have a heavy object you need to lift.
You could just pick it up, but it's heavy.
Now, try using a simple machine to lift the object.
It takes less force to use a simple machine to lift the object than if you tried to move it on your own.
So, how do simple machines work?
You are doing work when you apply a force.
Simple machines make work easier by changing the amount of force or distance needed to do the task.
Using an inclined plane reduces the amount of force needed but it's used over a longer distance.
You travel a longer distance to use a ramp, but it is easier to go up.
