Science Trek
Science Trek is a place where parents, kids, and educators can watch short, educational videos on a variety of science topics. Every Monday Science Trek releases a new video that introduces children to math, science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) career potentials in a fun, informative way.[MUSIC] JOAN CARTAN-HANSEN, HOST: There're six simple machines: the inclined plane, the pulley, the screw, the wheel and axle, the wedge, and the lever.
Let's look at the first three.
An inclined plane is used to move something from one place to another.
The plane helps spread out the force needed over more distance to move an object higher.
So, you need less effort to move something.
A wheelchair ramp, a slide, even stairs are all examples of inclined planes.
A pulley has a wheel and an axle.
There's a groove in the wheel and a line or a rope connected to the load.
The pulley helps distribute the weight of the load so it's easier to lift.
You'll find a pulley in a crane, some elevator, even a fishing reel.
Now the screw.
A screw is a cylinder with a thread wrapped around it at an angle.
Screws can move something higher or lower, or it can hold things together.
You can find a screw in the lid of a jar, in a light bulb, or a screw used to build things.
For more information about simple machines, check out the Science Trek website.
You'll find it at ScienceTrek.org
