Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipSusan Pringle Frost was a leader in the Women's Suffrage Movement in Charleston and an important figure in the preservation of Charleston's historic buildings.
In 1920, Frost opened her own real estate office, and upon learning the Charleston's historic Joseph Manigault house on Meeting Street was threatened to become a gas station Frost convened the first meeting of the legendary Preservation Society of Charleston.
She combined her interest in real estate and preservation, buying many historic buildings in Charleston, restoring them and then reselling them.
Frost was involved in the area located near Charleston's East Bay and Tradd Streets.
Her brilliant decision to paint a house a pastel color after restoring it was the prototype for other housing restorations in the area known as Charleston's beloved Rainbow Row.
